a strong faith, A Foundation of Hard Work and a Vision for More
Growing up in the "South Valley" of Albuquerque, New Mexico, an area he describes as the "worst of the four", Pavia learned the value of hard work from his mother. He recalls his mom instilling in him a vision to "always go get more no matter what".
“My mom, she’s hard-hat and lunch-pail. She grew up with 13 brothers and sisters in a single-parent home.”
She taught him a simple but powerful truth: "if you want it and you put in the work for it, you're going to get it". This early lesson laid the groundwork for a career defined by an unshakeable work ethic and a desire to elevate himself at every turn.
A cornerstone of Pavia’s success is his deep and abiding faith. Diego is very open and steadfast about how important his religious beliefs are to him and how he feels he was given a vision of playing in the SEC — believing he wouldn't have been given a chance to play at Vanderbilt had it not been a goal he couldn’t achieve.

He attributes the timing of his career—including the lack of Division 1 offers initially—to "his timing".
This faith journey, particularly his time at a military Junior College (i.e., “JUCO”) where he grew closer to his beliefs, has humbled him and prepared him for the opportunities that he currently has.
Resilience and the Drive to Step Up
Pavia's path was anything but linear.
After a standout high school career, he recognized that playing in New Mexico meant he wouldn't get the exposure he needed. He chose to transfer to the highest division (6A) to "step up with the big dogs".
When a transfer rule forced him to play on the junior varsity team, he didn't see it as a setback, but as an opportunity. He used that time to get into the weight room, transforming his body and increasing his size.
This ability to turn adversity into an advantage is a hallmark of his resilience.
Perhaps the most potent intangible quality Pavia possesses is a competitive fire and a chip on his shoulder. He recalls a pivotal moment during his JUCO recruitment when New Mexico State offered his opponent, giving him the mindset of, "Now I got a chip. Now I got no money. All right. Let's, you know, let's see".
He embraces competition and a fierce self-confidence that is a true differentiator on the field. He even notes that his mother told him he has the "it" factor.
A Tough, Purposeful Journey
Pavia's journey through JUCO during the COVID-19 pandemic was anything but easy. He had to deal with military-like rules and the overall recruitment slowdown caused by the pandemic.
However, he sees this difficult period as a divine intervention that "made me a better person" and helped him grow closer to his foundational strong faith.
His journey was not just about football; it was about preparing him for the life and career he was meant to have.
Diego Pavia’s story is a powerful reminder that success is built on more than just talent. It's built on the intangible qualities that define who you are when the stands are empty and the cameras are off.
For Pavia, that includes faith, resilience, a relentless work ethic, and a mindset that says, "I don't care who you are, where you're from. I'm going to outwork you and beat you ". This is the blueprint that has carried him from a high school star to a leader in the SEC.
