The Unseen Grind: Why Drive and Effort Define the Next Chapter
Finding Passion in What You Do & The Importance of Community.
In a recent episode of the Intangible Podcast, Chip Paucek, Co-founder and Co-CEO of Pro Athlete Community (PAC), shared his journey from a challenging upbringing to building successful ventures and his passion for empowering professional athletes. This conversation offers valuable insights into the mindset, drive, and community needed to thrive both on and off the field.
Key Takeaways:
Drive and Resilience: Essential qualities for success in any field. Not only athletics.
The Power of Community: Building strong networks and supporting others is crucial.
Contrarian Thinking: Don't be afraid to challenge the status quo.
Finding Your Ikigai: Seek work that aligns with your passions, skills, and the needs of the world.
The Intangible Edge: Qualities like resilience, discipline, and teamwork are highly transferable from sports to business and life.
From South Florida to the Nation's Capital: The Power of Education and Mentorship
Paucek's story began in South Florida, a far cry from the bustling political landscape of Washington D.C., where he attended George Washington University on a Pell Grant. Working three jobs to support himself through college, Paucek experienced firsthand the transformative power of education and the importance of mentorship.
"I got really passionate about education," he recalls,
"I got passionate about mentoring people. I got passionate about bringing other people up. And, and that really has stayed a thread throughout my whole career, to be honest."
“Most of the great wins are contrarian.”
Tough times don't last, tough people do
Paucek is no stranger to the grind. He emphasizes the importance of drive and resilience in the face of adversity. "If I give you the defining characteristic of me, it's drive," he states. "Drive, I just go."
“When you have a lot of criticism,” Paucek adds, “when you have people thinking like, 'yeah, this is a wild idea,’ you know, as an entrepreneur, most of the great wins are contrarian. So, you know, consensus is really important for a lot of things in life. But that doesn’t always mean it’s the best way.”
For Paucek, the courage to take chances is intrinsically linked with a strong belief in oneself and one's vision.
As noted in a previous blog, NFL Wide Receiver and current PhD at Vanderbilt University Earl Bennett, was a member of the PAC, which he accredits with giving him the support to keep going.
Building ventures from the ground up, especially in disruptive fields like online education as he did with 2U, Inc., demands an almost unshakeable conviction.
The Ikigai Principle: Finding Fulfillment at the Intersection of Passion, Purpose, and Profit
Paucek reflects on his career through the lens of the Japanese concept of ikigai, which describes the sweet spot where what you love, what you're good at, what the world needs, and what you can be paid for intersect.
"At this stage in my career," he says, "it's now obvious to me that I never had all four until PAC."
Make it stand out
Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
It's with Pro Athlete Community (PAC) that Paucek genuinely feels he's achieved his Ikigai. Here's how each circle aligns for him within PAC:
What he loves: Paucek clearly has a deep passion for professional sports and empowering individuals, especially those transitioning from athletic careers. He speaks with genuine enthusiasm about the "amazing" experience of seeing athletes change their lives through PAC.
What he is good at: His extensive background in education technology, building companies from the ground up, and fostering connections makes him exceptionally skilled at creating the framework and resources PAC offers. He's adept at identifying needs and building solutions.
What the world needs: There's a clear and significant need for supporting athletes beyond their playing days, providing them with the tools, community, and education to succeed in their "next chapter." PAC directly addresses this often-overlooked societal need.
What he can be paid for: As Co-CEO of PAC, Paucek is involved in a venture that has the potential for sustainable growth and financial viability, allowing him to dedicate his expertise and time to this passion.
Pro Athlete Community: Empowering Athletes for Life Beyond the Game
For Chip, PAC isn't just another business venture; it's the culmination of his life's work, where his drive, experience, and deepest passions converge with a critical need in the world. Discovering his Ikigai with PAC allows him to engage in work that is not only successful but also deeply fulfilling, resonating with his core belief in the power of education and personal connection to transform lives.
PAC represents Paucek's commitment to giving back and supporting professional athletes in their transition to life after sports.
Drawing on his own experiences and the unique skills and resilience of athletes, PAC provides a community and resources to help them thrive in their next chapter.
"What I find fascinating about NFL players is that they all... really don't even appreciate in some ways how elite what you did is and how relevant that is to intangible," he says.
